Overview

Internally Managed Programme Activities

The Foundation's experience in grant making leads to an awareness of certain areas of research or development where long-term study or involvement could make a difference. From its long association with these areas the Foundation builds up considerable expertise among its own staff that enables the setting up of internally managed, long term activities. Currently these are:

  • The Nuffield Curriculum Centre - The Centre leads and co-ordinates a range of school-based curriculum development projects and associated activities both within the Centre and in partnership with other institutions.
  • The Nuffield Council on Bioethics - Jointly funded by the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust the Council is an independent body providing impartial expert advice to assist in the formation of public policy and to foster public understanding of ethical issues raised by advances in biology and biomedicine.

Issues of Common Concern to Foundations and Trusts

Foundations and Trusts develop their own grant-making procedures relevant to their areas of interest. But there are common issues that all face, and the Nuffield Foundation believes in sharing experience and information.

  • - Issues related to the investment of charitable endowments are currently being explored through a series of seminars in conjuction with Professor Elroy Dimson of the London Business School.

Past Initiatives

  • The Nuffield Languages Programme - The Programme was set up after the publication of the report of the Nuffield Languages Inquiry in 1999 and ran until 2003. Its purpose was to take forward the recommendations of the Inquiry and to promote a strategic approach to the development of national capability in languages.
